Assessing the Economic and Demographic Impact of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories

The Palestine Economic Policy Research Institute (MAS)is pleased to invite you to a launch event to introduce stakeholders to its project:

Assessing the Economic and Demographic Impact of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories

This project, which is implemented in cooperation with the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies, carries unique significance against the backdrop of the ongoing Israeli settlement project and its expansion in the Palestinian territories, which have only accelerated since October 2023. This settler colonial project, predating1948, has persisted despite a twenty-five year “peace process” that led instead to a genocidal war against Palestine. Israel has pursed its quest by expanding current settlements, establishing and legalizing new outposts, and effectively annexing Palestinian land through deed and law.

This project aims, through its distinct outcomes, at measuring settlements’ economic and social impacts and the cost incurred by the Palestinian people and economy, in the broader context of international research on the cost of occupation. Since initiating work on the project, MAS has been applying a comprehensive, focused and specialized approach to this challenge, as well as introducing modern evaluation techniques to measure and quantify the impact of the settlement project. We have already begun cooperating with several specialized institutions in coordinating research efforts and methodologies and hopes to expand and institutionalize this network.

Thelaunch event will include a brief introduction to the context of the project aswell as a presentation on progress thus far, followed by an open discussionwith relevant stakeholders. Through this consultation, we seek to harness your perspectives on the topic of Israeli settlements and their social, economic, and demographic impacts on Palestine, including initial outcomes, and ideas that can support the project and its analysis, methodologies, and results.

Your engagement will be essential in developing relevant methodologies to measure the economic impact of Israeli settlements on Palestine, and to explore how to expand the analysis to encompass environmental and natural resource impacts, as well as the ideological and legal offensive enabling the settlement project ,in cooperation with specialized stakeholders.

The launch will be held on Wednesday, July24, 2024, from 12:00 to 14:00 followed by light refreshments at

Conference Hall-MAS premises- Al Masyoun, Mui’n Bseisso St, Ramallah
